Eldon Tipping

Eldon G. Tipping, PE, FACI is Vice-Chairman and Principal of Structural Services, Inc. (SSI), a privately held company based in Waxahachie, Texas. His more than 40 years of experience in the design and construction industry began as a structural designer for commercial and industrial structures; Mr. Tipping later served as Vice President for a commercial materials testing laboratory where he monitored construction projects.

After founding his firm in 1988, Mr. Tipping developed placement, finishing, and monitoring procedures that make construction of superior on-ground and suspended slabs practical. A leading authority on tolerances and construction of both on-ground and suspended floors, he has received several awards:
  • 2000 – elected as a Fellow in the American Concrete Institute,
  • 2005 – selected by Concrete Construction magazine as one of the Ten Most Influential People in the concrete industry,
  • 2005 – elected to receive ACI’s Delmar L. Bloem Distinguished Service Award for leadership of ACI Committee 302 (Floor and Slab Construction),
  • 2006 – selected by the Texas A&M College of Architecture to receive its Outstanding Alumni Award in recognition of outstanding leadership and accomplishments,
  • 2008 – selected to receive the Samuel A. Face, Jr. Golden Trowel Award for his “accomplishments in, and contributions to, the Art and Science of High Quality Horizontal Concrete Construction.”
  • 2006-2009 – elected to the ACI Board of Direction
Mr. Tipping is currently a member of ACI’s Technical Activities Committee. His other ACI committee memberships include the 117 Tolerance Committee (past chair), 302 (Guide for Concrete Floor and Slab Construction-Past Chair), and 360 (Design of Slabs on Grade). He is the author of numerous articles in professional publications, is a frequent speaker at the World of Concrete, and leads educational seminars.
Tipping received a BS in Architectural Construction in 1969 and an MArch in Construction Management in 1973 from Texas A&M University with an emphasis on structural design and management. He is a registered professional engineer in the States of Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and and is also a member of the American Concrete Pavement Association, the American Institute of Steel Construction, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Concrete Contractors, ASTM International, the International Concrete Repair Institute, and the Structural Engineers Association of Texas.
